The Wonder of Faith

"Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Luke 1:45

Elizabeth's declaration to Mary, "Blessed is she who has believed," reveals a profound truth: faith is the key that unlocks a sense of wonder in the midst of God's seemingly impossible promises. Mary was a young woman facing an unimaginable and humanly impossible situation, yet she believed what the Lord had spoken to her. Her faith wasn't a blind leap; it was an act of humble trust in a God who had a long history of fulfilling His word. This trust is what allowed her to experience the profound sense of wonder that accompanied the miraculous.

We can have a great sense of wonder when we realize how mighty God is. This wonder isn't reserved for grand miracles alone; it's also found in the small, ordinary things around us. Children often have a great sense of wonder during this time of year, excited about the lights, the tree, and the simple magic of the season. We, too, can recapture this sense of wonder by looking at the world with the eyes of faith. When we see a tree, we can see the divine design ; when we see a family, we can see the miracle of relationships; when we see a simple sunrise, we can see the faithfulness of a God who brings light out of darkness.

Jesus wants our hearts, not just our wants. A heart that believes and has wonder is a heart that is open to God’s work. The possibilities that arise from this belief are endless. Faith enables us to see the possibilities that can be, such as restored marriages, saved friendships, and freedom from loneliness. The greatest wonder of all is that a transcendent God came to earth in search of us. It's a miracle that can only be grasped and fully appreciated through the lens of faith.

Look for a small, ordinary thing today and intentionally see it through the eyes of divine wonder and design.

Questions for Reflection

1. Think of a promise God has made in Scripture. What makes it hard for you to believe He will fulfill it, and how can you ask for the faith to see its wonder?

2. What if the wonder we have is not found in a time of year but a person? How can you shift your focus from the "wonder" of the holiday season to the "wonder" of Jesus himself?

3. What specific part of your life or situation do you need to look at with eyes of faith to see the possibility of God's work?
