The Enduring Light

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

The Christmas decorations are being packed away, the music is fading, and the year is quickly drawing to a close. This period often ushers in a sense of letdown or spiritual confusion—a kind of "darkness" after the holiday light has gone out. This scripture from John is a powerful reassurance that the light is enduring; it does not fade with the season. Christ’s arrival shattered the spiritual darkness that had covered the world, giving us a light to guide our path even after the holiday season ends.

Jesus proclaiming, "I am the light of the world," is a statement of permanent, unwavering presence. Unlike a flickering candle or temporary string of lights, His light does not depend on our circumstances, our emotional state, or the time of year. It is a constant, enduring source of clarity, purpose, and hope. This is especially vital as we face the transition into a new year, often filled with uncertainty, confusion, or lingering difficulties. The challenge of the unhurried life is to carry the spiritual disciplines and focus on Christ from Advent into the ordinary months of the new year.

If you feel a sense of confusion or darkness in any area of your life—whether it is a career decision, a relationship issue, or a spiritual struggle—Jesus is the one to whom we must turn. His light is not just a gentle glow; it is powerful enough to illuminate your path, showing you the very next step you need to take. We do not have to walk in darkness or try to frantically guess our future steps. The unhurried way is to pause, acknowledge the area that feels dark, and invite the Light of the World to specifically show us the way.

Identify one area of your life that feels dark or confused, and ask the Light of the World to specifically illuminate your next step for the new year.
